Traditions

Will is home for Christmas.  It gladdens my heart.

This is a new experience for us – to have one who has left the nest come back home for the holidays. I am liking it.

I told him that his dad has a bad case of influenza, and I asked him if he wanted to take the risk of getting it over Christmas. He said that he was willing to take the risk.

Ralph’s illness has upset one of our family traditions. Ralph will not be strong enough to make the ham. All but one of the 28 years that we have celebrated Christmas as a married couple, he has cooked the main dish, either turkey or ham. (I make some of the side dishes and I make the desserts). He had influenza the last time he didn’t cook the main dish at Christmas, as well.

Ralph wants Will to cook the ham. He asked Will to cook the ham with his coaching. So the tradition of having the man cook the main dish continues in the Kilter Household.

We have other traditions, as well.

We always have a box of Whitman’s chocolates, which we eat over the course of three or four days…offering the box to each other to choose one piece.

We read the story of the first Christmas before opening presents.

We watch Christmas movies. Often, we go to the theater on Christmas day.

What are your traditions?

With Sincere, deepest apologies to William Blake

Tiger, tiger in our tree. I see him looking out at me. Who knew, when kitten found that he….Would make his home a Christmas tree?

When first he shimmied up the tree…He was a kit, 2 oz, pound three,…Now 15 pounds, give or take…His climb doth cause the tree to quake.

He is the smartest cat of all…and with his polydactyl claws..He knocks ornaments off with fury…Picking them up makes me weary.

Tiger coos with delight…As he climbs up past the lights…Then hubby cries out with a mighty shout…Tiger, from the tree get out!

Then Mr. Tiger takes a flight…Over all the Christmas lights…Like a sparrow, like a robin…He just makes those lights go wobblin’

Mr. Tiger, in our tree…Why did you climb up so high? Did you think you are a bird? Did you think that you could fly?

Tiger, tiger, in our tree…Again I see him look out at me…Who knew, when kitten found, that he…Would make his home a Christmas tree?

Knowing God’s Will

“I Thessalonians 5:16-18. “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

When my kids were small, I couldn’t envision the future. It was like a wall that I couldn’t climb; like a fog that I couldn’t see through. I don’t know if I really held hope, unless it could be the hope that for some reason God had a reason for placing me in this circumstance. That he had a reason for placing three kids with special needs in this family. He brought this verse to me. And I decided that even if I could not see the future, I could at least know that I was doing God’s will when I practiced these things. I was already praying continually (God, what am I going to do? I don’t know what to do! – Help me!). I could practice thankfulness. I had a hard time with rejoicing though. I couldn’t do it in myself, so I began listening to music that rejoiced.

More than a chance

When it comes down to it, perhaps our children need more than just a chance to prove they can do the work.

They need guardian angels. Protectors. Mentors. Compatriots. Friends.

Will had  a very tough day at work today.
